“Starting is not most people’s problem, staying, continuing and finishing is.” - Darren Hardy - So, in case you may not have remembered, I had started this blog some days back with just a basic structure of the letters. I have now returned to it and added some finishing touches. I first changed the shape of the S, increased the line height of the music-note letters. I then darkened in and filled out the strokes of the letters to give them more dimension and structure. I like the look this particular font displays with its thick and thin strokes. The juxtaposition is subtle but definitely adds a little something. I'm finding that as I create different looks, I pull from this aesthetic a lot, a combo of thick and thin strokes. It's interesting to have worked enough now on some designs to recognize that and see what type of designer I am becoming. What a journey my mind has taken these last few weeks...

"All of the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself." - Chuck Close - I worked today on a practice I found online. The goal was to explore as many different ways that you can combine letters to form a word. I chose the word Monday, well, because it is Monday. The exercise forces you to get out of your comfort zone, change speeds, break the rules...which I did...a little. I didn't realize when I started how hard it would be to challenge myself to come up with more than just one way to write a word. Wait, that sounded weird, but it's true...more often than not I look at a word and see it written one way, not sure why. Maybe it's the way I've always seen the word written or maybe my mind is closed off or maybe I'm just tired? I couldn't tell you at this point, but what I can say is that this exercise really helped me begin the process of breaking that barrier and I enjoyed it. Now, I didn't do the 25 different ways that the blogger had suggested, but I did do quite a few. I think I'll continue this practice at least once a week, maybe I'll get to that 25 and if I'm really lucky 100. Although, her 100 was with only 1 letter...impressive though. For now, here is what I've got :) I began my design today by deciding some of the flowers I enjoy best in my garden. These are a rough draft to an idea I have about packaging for seed packets. The cursive font is the name of the flower and the upper case print is the name of its family (scientists way to group similar genuses together). The mix of the two styles could work, but I'm not sold on the "underlined" part. My other thought is to have the name of the flower cross-over the family name...something to think about and experiment with later.
Happy LOVE Day!
Merriam Webster's word of the day. I am happy to report that this was a great word for my first usage of "word of the day." It has my favorite fancy letter, the G. I used that as the base for the rest of the way I stylized the word. Of course I wish I could take it a little further, but what I'm finding is that although I've regulated time spent on my blog, I am creating referenceable work, and that's something. I am also teaching myself restraint. I've learned that over the course of my Graphic Design degree I often times "exhaust" my design with too much hype. Less is more, right?!? |
